If I were to say America is on the brink of disaster, nearly every person reading that statement would assume I mean that we face a strong possibility of being overcome by terrorists or possibly wiped out by some nuclear holocaust. I frankly do not believe either of those events is likely to happen anytime in this century. What I do see happening, however, is more frightening and more sure to wreak destruction.
It’s a much greater danger than those other possibilities because it is so insidious — so silent and subtle — that most Americans are not even aware of it — let alone concerned. And, in truth, the situation has been made to sound so politically correct and acceptable that thousands of U. S. citizens have bought into the situation so gradually that they are actually laying aside their patriotic commitment to this nation as “one nation under God,” and promoting the problem more ever year.
Just what is the problem? The gradual, deliberate, treacherous “dis-uniting” of the United States of America. Let’s face some facts: We currently live in a land where government and society at large is more focused on and concerned about the ethnic backgrounds and cultures of large, independent, self-serving people groups than they are the background and heritage of this nation as a whole. Several million people who “call” themselves citizens of the U. S. nevertheless want to be labeled and addressed by names that focus on their separate ethnic heritage, and they often want special privileges that allow them to function according to that “foreign” heritage rather than according to the principles of this nation. But when Americans consider themselves Afro-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Italian-Americans, Native Americans, etc, — and want the rest of society to treat them in that light — that mindset brings on nothing but DIS-unity.
Now, add to that dis-unified society several hundred thousand more “un-Americans” who cross the borders illegally every day, and we find ourselves on the brink of destruction as a nation. People who are in favor of illegal immigrants being granted all the benefits of our nation keep attempting to draw an analogy between illegal immigrants today and the original immigrants to this nation. What those people forget — or deliberately ignore — is the fact that when the original immigrants came here, they did not try to reconstruct the nation and the ideologies they left behind. They came for the purpose of becoming something NEW — something totally different from what they had been as citizens of another nation.
Some of my grandparents inhabited this land when the first immigrants came across the Atlantic. And some of my grandparents came across the Atlantic to have the privilege of living here. Those who came paid a great price in order to come. Did they do some things wrong? Yes, some of them did. Some of them treated the original inhabitants shamefully. But, hopefully, we have learned from those mistakes and recognize that allowing thousands of foreign people to illegally throng this nation and threaten the welfare of its legal citizens is a deadly serious move.
Today, all of the thousands of people who come to this nation LEGALLY also pay a great price to be able to live here. And they value that privilege enough to commit themselves to becoming AMERICANS — not SEMI-AMERICANS. Moreover, they resent the fact that thousand of others pour across our borders without going through the channels and paying the price, but often get even more benefits than those who come here legally.
I sometimes ask myself: are we blind, or are we just idiots? It should be simple to understand that when any group of people claim they want to live in America but want to pull down the American flag in order to hoist the flag of their previous nationality, they DO NOT want to be an American! And when any ethnic group wants our legal system to try their cases by the laws of their previous nation, and not our U. S. laws, they DO NOT want to be Americans! Even an elementary-aged child can understand that people with those mindsets do not want to build our nation — they want to tear it down. And we need to see them as — and treat them as — our enemies.
Citizens of the United States of America are NOT Hispanics, Africans, Italians, Russians, Australians, Indians, Iranians, etc. They are AMERICANS — or they are a threat to the rest of us who truly are Americans. We need to stop this rapidly growing multi-headed monster of “ethnic equality” and save “equality” for those who want to be simply and completely AMERICANS. Any other system will doom us to failure, for the inescapable truth is still the same as it was in the beginning of this nation: United we Stand; Dis-united we Fall.
Below are the words of President Theodore Roosevelt, written shortly before he died. He too saw the danger in people being allowed citizenship in this country when they were not whole-heartedly committed to being true to America and her original ideals and heritage:
“We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.
But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn’t doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. . . We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people.”
